History of Portales
Portales is a city in and the county seat of Roosevelt County, New Mexico, United States. The population was 12,280 at the 2010 census. Portales is the home of Eastern New Mexico University, the largest regional comprehensive university in the state.
A colony was established at the site in 1898, when the area was still part of the New Mexico Territory. It was named for the nearby Portales de Antón, a natural rock formation along the Pecos River. The first settlers to the area arrived in 1900. Prior to the arrival of the colonists, the area was populated by the Navajo and Mescalero Apache peoples.
The colonists faced many hardships in the early years, including a severe drought in 1902. However, they persevered and the community began to grow. In 1908, the county seat was moved from Blackdom to Portales. The city continued to grow and by 1940, the population had reached 5,000.
The economy of Portales was originally based on agriculture, but it diversified in the mid20th century. The establishment of Eastern New Mexico University in 1934 was a major boost to the economy. The university is now the largest employer in the city.
