History of Grand Junction

Grand Junction is a city in the western United States, located in the state of Colorado. The city is the county seat of Mesa County and the largest city on the Colorado River between Utah and Colorado. Grand Junction is the 15th most populous city in the state of Colorado and the most populous city in Western Colorado. Grand Junction is the principle city of the Grand Junction Metropolitan Statistical Area which had a estimated population of 146,723 in 2019. The city is located along Interstate 70, the main highway between Salt Lake City and Denver. It is also the largest city in the area known as the Grand Valley.

The recorded history of the Grand Valley begins with the Ute people, who inhabited the area for centuries prior to the arrival of European settlers. The Utes were a nomadic people who occupied the mountains and plateaus of western Colorado and eastern Utah. They were proficient in hunting and gathering and survived by trading with other Native American tribes.

The first Europeans to settle in the area were Spanish explorers, who arrived in the early 18th century in search of gold and silver. However, they did not find the treasures they were seeking and instead opened up the region for American settlement.

In the early 1800s, American trappers and traders began to arrive in the Grand Valley in search of beaver pelts, which were in high demand back east. These early settlers were followed by farmers and ranchers, who established homesteads in the valley.

The city of Grand Junction was founded in 1882 by George Crawford, who originally named it Grand County Junction in reference to the confluence of the Colorado and Gunnison rivers. The name was later shortened to Grand Junction.

Grand Junction rapidly grew in the late 19th and early 20th centuries due to the discovery of uranium in the nearby Uravan Mineral Belt. The city became known as the “Uranium Capital of the World” and attracted workers from all over the country. The uranium boom eventually went bust, but Grand Junction continued to grow as a commercial and agricultural center.

Today, Grand Junction is a thriving city with a diverse economy. The city is home to a number of industries, ranging from healthcare and education to tourism and recreation. Grand Junction is also a popular retirement destination, due to its mild climate and scenic location.
