History of San Clemente

San Clemente is located in Orange County, California. The city was incorporated on February 27, 1928.

The area was first inhabited by the Gabrielino/Tongva tribe. The city got its name from the Spanish Mission San Clemente del Rio de Santa Ana, which was founded in 1776.

After the MexicanAmerican War, the city was part of Mexico until the area was purchased by the United States in 1848 as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo.

In the early 1900s, the city was a popular stopover for travelers going between Los Angeles and San Diego. The city started to grow rapidly in the 1920s, after the completion of the Pacific Coast Highway.

In 1925, the city gained notoriety when city officials attempted to banish all alcoholic beverages. This led to a rise in bootlegging and speakeasies.

The city continued to grow in the 1930s and 1940s, with the construction of several military bases. During World War II, the city was home to a prisoner of war camp.

After the war, the city became a popular destination for Hollywood celebrities. In the 1950s, the city was the site of the launch of the first satellite, Explorer I.
