History of Grafton
Grafton was first settled in 1724 by a group of Massachusetts colonists led by the Rev. Joseph Blanchard. The town was originally part of the town of Upton, but was established as its own town in 1735. The name “Grafton” comes from the town of Grafton in Worcestershire, England.
The town’s early years were marked by conflict with the local Native American population. In 1747, the town was attacked by a band of Mohawk warriors, and several residents were killed. In 1755, during the French and Indian War, the town was again attacked, this time by a group of French and Indian soldiers. Once again, several residents were killed.
Despite these early difficulties, the town continued to grow and prosper. By the mid19th century, it had become a thriving center of trade and industry. The coming of the railroad in 1848 brought even more prosperity to the town.
Today, Grafton is a quiet, picturesque New England town. Its historic downtown area is home to a variety of shops and businesses, and its scenic location on the banks of the Connecticut River makes it a popular destination for tourists.
