History of Hampton
Hampton, Virginia, is located on the Hampton Roads harbor at the southern end of Chesapeake Bay. It is considered one of the oldest continuous settlement areas in the United States.
The Native American Powhatan tribe first inhabited the area now known as Hampton. They called it “Kecoughtan”, which translates to “place of beautiful views”. The first European settlers to arrive in Hampton were led by Captain Christopher Newport in 1607. The settlers established a fort and town, which they named Elizabeth Cittie. Hampton became a prosperous farming community and was officially designated a city in 1705.
In the early 1800s, Hampton was a strategic location during the War of 1812 and the American Civil War. The Union army occupied Hampton in 1861 and it became a major base for their operations. After the war, Hampton’s economy recovered and the city became a popular resort destination.
That popularity continued into the late 20th century, when Hampton became known as a historic and cultural center.
