History of Santa Clara
In 1777, the pueblo of San José de Guadalupe was established by Spanish settlers at the present site of Santa Clara. The city was originally a part of Monterey County, but in 1852 became one of the original counties of California. Santa Clara was incorporated as a city in 1852 and became the county seat of Santa Clara County.
The city’s name was changed to Santa Clara on January 18, 1853, the same day that the city of San Francisco was incorporated. The reason for the change is not known. Santa Clara then remained the county seat until 1858 when county government was moved to San Jose.
As with most of the California Missions, Santa Clara’s Mission San Francisco de Asís was founded by Father Junípero Serra. It was named after St. Clare of Assisi and given the motto “You are all Christ’s.” Construction of the mission began in 1777 and was completed in 1781.
The original plaza of the City of Santa Clara was located along El Camino Real (The Royal Road), the main highway connecting all the Spanish missions in California. The area of the plaza is now occupied by two mission churches: the Old Mission Church and the New Mission Church.
In 1846, the American flag was raised over Monterey and the United States took control of California from Mexico. One year later, Santa Clara College, California’s first institution of higher learning, was founded in the city. The college now known as Santa Clara University is the oldest university in California and the west coast of the United States.
The Santa Clara Valley was once famous for its large apricot orchards. These orchards remained a significant part of the Valley’s economy until the Great Depression of the 1930s. At one time, there were over 60 canneries in operation in Santa Clara.
The first electric railroad in the world, the Sherman Street Railway, began operating in Santa Clara in 1879. The streetcars were powered by electricity generated at the College.
In the early 20th century, Santa Clara became known as the “Valley of Heart’s Delight” due to the large number of orchards in the area. The city also became a major center for the canning industry.
Today, Santa Clara is a thriving Silicon Valley city with a population of over 116,000. The city is home to hightech companies such as Intel, Oracle, and Applied Materials. Santa Clara is also home to Santa Clara University, a topranked private university.
