History of Vallejo
The city of Vallejo is located in the San Francisco Bay Area of the United States. It is the largest city in Solano County and has a population of 115,942 people. The city covers 49 square miles of land and is the 10th most populous city in the Bay Area. Vallejo was founded in 1851 and was named after General Mariano Vallejo. He was the commander of the California militia during the MexicanAmerican War and also served as the state’s military governor during the Bear Flag Revolt.
The city of Vallejo is located on the site of a former Mexican settlement called Sonoma. In 1835, Mariano Vallejo was granted the Rancho Suscol Mexican land grant. He built a adobe home on the Rancho and it quickly became a gathering place for Sonoma’s settlers. In 1846, war broke out between the United States and Mexico and Vallejo was elected to the California State Constitutional Convention. After the war, Vallejo was made the military governor of California. He was instrumental in the Bear Flag Revolt which led to the creation of the California Republic.
In 1851, Vallejo’s soninlaw, Francis W. Hatch, laid out the city’s streets and Vallejo was incorporated as a city in 1852. The city grew rapidly during the 1850s and 1860s as it became a major stop on the California Gold Rush trail. Vallejo was the terminus of the Pony Express and was also a major shipbuilding center during the Civil War.
In 1868, the city was hit by a major earthquake which caused extensive damage. The city was rebuilt and continued to grow. In the early 20th century, Vallejo became a major industrial center with the construction of a large naval shipyard. During World War II, the shipyard built over 500 ships for the war effort.
After the war, the shipyard was closed and the city went into decline. In the late 20th century, the city began to redevelop and today it is a thriving city with a diversified economy.
