History of Pasadena (California)
Pasadena, California is a city in Los Angeles County, California, United States. Pasadena is the secondlargest city in Los Angeles County and the 37th most populous city in the United States. Pasadena is located 10 miles (16 kilometers) northeast of downtown Los Angeles. The 2010 United States Census reported that Pasadena had a population of 149,043, making it the 183rd largest city in the United States. Pasadena’s estimated 2019 population was 152,560.
Pasadena is one of the main cultural centers of the San Gabriel Valley. The city is known for hosting Tournament of Roses Parade and Rose Bowl, as well as for being the original home of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), California Institute of Technology (Caltech), Fuller Theological Seminary, ArtCenter College of Design and Pasadena City College (PCC).
The original inhabitants of Pasadena and surrounding areas were members of the Hahamogna tribe, a branch of the Tongva Nation (‘People of the Earth’). They had lived in the Los Angeles Basin for thousands of years.

The Tongva are an indigenous people of California who historically inhabited the Los Angeles Basin and the Southern Channel Islands, an area covering approximately 4,000 square miles (10,000 km2). The Tongva occupied three major territories: the first was around the coast of Southern California from Malibu northward, including all of Santa Catalina Island; the second was inland, centered on the San Gabriel Valley; and the third was the Northern Channel Islands off the coast of Santa Barbara.
The Hahamogna tribe had several major settlements within the presentday borders of Pasadena.Libukhtna, or “place of the boughs”, was a large village ceremonial and political center located by the presentday Rose Bowl. Hahamongna also served as a meeting place for the region’s two main native American groups: the Hahamogna and Tongva.
Jaxwaxeng, or “place of the fox”, was another major village by the presentday Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills. It was known for its large size and many rooms, as well as for its springs and pools, which were used for ceremonies.
Pakitaxel, or “place of the Fletcher”, was a village located near what is now York Boulevard and Favor Avenue. The village was named after one of its chiefs, who gained distinction in battle.
Axukswanngen, or “place of the short Wool”, was a village at the presentday site of Lindsey Avenue and Walnut Street. The village was the primary source of raw materials for making baskets and other woven articles.
Pasadena is thought to be named after the Valley of the Pasadocica, an early name for the San Gabriel Valley. The Translation Bureau of the United States Government lists the name as “Tongva”. In 1925, ethnographer Samuel Alfred Barrett wrote an tongue article about the language of the Hahanogna people, saying that their dialect was closely related to Shoshonean dialects spoken by tribes in Nevada.
The first Europeans to visit the Pasadena area were members of the Portolá expedition, which passed through the area on August 2–4, 1769 while searching for the best route between northern Mexico and Monterey Bay.
Pasadena was founded on June 19, 1874, by a group of easterners who came west on a real estate venture. The original settlers, all of whom were members of the Bass family, were from Groton, Massachusetts. Dr. William, Walter, Amos, Oramel, and Edward Bass, along with their cousin Henry Wilson, were members of the Second Company of adventurers organized by a group of Groton citizens known as the New England Emigrant Aid Company. The New England Emigrant Aid Company had been organized to assist poor farmers in Massachusetts by helping them purchase land in the West. The Second Company, which included the Bass brothers, left Groton on May 10, 1854, and arrived in Kansas Territory on July 16.
The original plan was for the settlers to buy land in Topeka, but they were unsuccessful. They then decided to settle in the Kansas River bottoms near presentday Lawrence. In October 1854, Amos Bass rode east to Groton to fetch his family. The following spring, the rest of the Second Company, including the Bass brothers, joined Amos in Kansas.
