History of Kingston (Rhode Island)
In 1675, a group of Massachusetts colonists led by Colonel Benjamin Church gathered at the site of presentday Kingston to defend themselves against the threat of attack by the Wampanoag Indians. They built a fortified camp which they called Fort Number One. This structure was the first permanent European settlement in Rhode Island.
In 1638, Roger Williams, the founder of the Rhode Island colony, purchased the land on which Kingston sits from the Narragansett Indians. He named the area “King’s Towne” in honor of King Charles I of England. Williams also established the first Baptist church in America at Kingston in 1639.
Kingston was the capital of Rhode Island from 1775 until 1800, when the capital was moved to Providence. During the American Revolution, Kingston was the site of the Rhode Island General Assembly, which was held in the Old Stone House, an iconic 18thcentury structure which still stands today.
In the 19th century, Kingston grew rapidly as a result of the industrialization of nearby Pawtucket and Providence. The Village of West Kingston was incorporated in 1888, and the City of Kingston in 1892.
