The city is situated 16 miles (26 km) northeast of downtown Denver and 38 miles (61 km) northnorthwest of Aurora. As of the 2010 census, the city population was 35,444. Brighton was founded in the 1870s as a poultry farming community and was originally known as Horse Creek Station. The town was incorporated in 1887.
