The city’s population was estimated at 67,371 in 2016. The current estimated population is 70,874 as of 2019. Delray Beach is a principal city of the Miami metropolitan area, which was home to an estimated 6,012,331 people in 2015.
The origin of the name “Delray” is uncertain. Some believe it is a corruption of “del Rey”, meaning “of the king” in Spanish. Others believe it derives from the Moccolo Indian word for “ridge”.

History of Delray Beach
The history of Delray Beach, Florida, began in 1884 when Henry Flagler’s Florida East Coast Railway extended its line south from West Palm Beach. The area of the first settlement, founded by William Linton, was incorporated as the town of Delray on April 14, 1911. On July 1, 1925, Delray merged with the neighboring town of Gulfstream to form the present city.
The early history of Delray Beach is closely tied to the development of the Florida East Coast Railway by Henry Flagler. The FEC built its first rail line through the area in 1885, and soon thereafter Flagler’s luxury hotels, the Royal Poinciana Hotel in Palm Beach and the Breakers Hotel in Daytona, began to bring winter visitors to the Sunshine State. In 1896, the FEC extended its rail line south from West Palm Beach to Miami, making Delray Beach the junction of the northsouth and eastwest rail lines.
The area around the FEC railway junction became the site of the first settlement in what is now Delray Beach. A small community known as Linton Park was established in 1896 by William Linton, a wealthy businessman from Michigan who purchased a large tract of land from the FEC. Linton added a post office, a general store, and a schoolhouse to the community, which soon began to attract other settlers.
In 1911, the town of Delray was incorporated. The following year, the town’s first newspaper, the Delray Beach News, was founded. The city continued to grow steadily in the 1920s, adding new schools, churches, and businesses.
On July 1, 1925, the city of Delray Beach was created when the town of Delray merged with the neighboring town of Gulfstream. The new city included all of the presentday city of Delray Beach, as well as the adjacent communities of Gulfstream, Ocean Ridge, and Briny Breezes.
The 1920s was a period of significant growth for Delray Beach. The city’s population increased from 1,500 in 1920 to 5,000 in 1929. New businesses and civic organizations were founded, and the city’s infrastructure improved with the construction of new roads, a water plant, and a sewer system.
The city continued to grow in the 1930s and 1940s, despite the worldwide economic depression and Second World War. In 1941, the city’s first bridge, the Atlantic Avenue Bridge, was built to connect Delray Beach with the nearby city of Atlantic Beach.
Following the war, Delray Beach became a popular destination for retirees and vacationers from the northeastern United States. In the 1950s, many of the city’s older buildings were demolished to make way for new resort hotels and condominiums. The city’s population more than doubled between 1950 and 1960, reaching 12,000.
The 1960s and 1970s saw continued growth and development in Delray Beach. New residential neighborhoods were built, and the city’s downtown area was revitalized with the addition of new shops and restaurants. In 1965, the Delray Beach Mall opened, becoming the city’s first enclosed shopping mall.
The 1980s and 1990s were a period of transition for Delray Beach. Many of the city’s older residents died or moved away, and the city’s population declined. However, the city’s economy began to rebound in the late 1990s, and the population began to grow again.
Today, Delray Beach is a vibrant, thriving city with a population of more than 60,000. The city’s downtown area has been revitalized, and its beaches are among the best in Florida. Delray Beach is a great place to live, work, and play.
