As of the 2010 United States Census, the borough’s population was 7,844, reflecting an increase of 24 (+0.3%) from the 7,820 counted in the 2000 Census, which had in turn increased by 590 (+8.0%) from the 7,230 counted in the 1990 Census.
In 2008, Caldwell was ranked #16 on Money magazine’s list of “America’s Best Places to Live”.

The land that is now Caldwell was originally part of Horseneck, a township that was created on February 26, 1798, from portions of Acquackanonk Township and Newark Township. On April 11, 1806, the first town meeting was held in the home of Alexander Brown, and it was at this meeting that the name of the town was changed to Caldwell, in honor of James Caldwell, a local minister and patriot.
Caldwell was incorporated as a borough by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on February 10, 1892, from portions of Caldwell Township (now Fairfield Township).

History of Caldwell (New Jersey)
Caldwell, New Jersey is a borough located in Essex County. As of the 2010 Census, Caldwell’s population was 7,844. Caldwell is adjacent to the borough of West Caldwell and is often referred to as one of the “Five Towns” along with its neighbouring townships of North Caldwell, Essex Fells, Fairfield and Verona.
The area now known as Caldwell was originally incorporated as Caldwell Township on February 16, 1798, from portions of Acquackanonk Township and Livingston Township. On April 8, 1898, the township was incorporated as a borough.
The first permanent settlers in Caldwell were members of the Manning family, who established a farm in the area which is now known as Manning Park. The family Farmhouse, which dates back to 1753, still stands today and is currently used as the borough’s historical museum.
Caldwell’s first mayor was William H. Best, who served in office for two years beginning in 1898. The borough’s first police officer was appointed in 1899.
Caldwell was originally a farming community, but began to see increased residential development in the early 20th century. The construction of the Essex County Park system in the 1930s brought even more residents to the borough.
Today, Caldwell is a vibrant community with a mix of residential and commercial development. The borough’s downtown area is home to a variety of shops and eateries, as well as the Caldwell Public Library.
