History of Sparks

Incorporated in 1905, the City of Sparks is nestled at the base of the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range. Primarily a rail town, today it is home to over 90,000 residents and is the fifth largest city in Nevada.

The area now called Sparks was first inhabited by the Washoe people. The first Europeans to arrive in the area were part of the StephensTownsendMurphy Party in 1844. The party discovered the Truckee River and camped in the vicinity of presentday Winged Peak. John C. Fremont named the river after a trapper he had met, and the name was later changed to honor Carson River explorer Kit Carson.

In the 1860s settlers established ranches in the area and built a toll road the Virginia & Truckee Railroad to transport silver and timber from Virginia City to California. Once the Comstock Lode began to play out, the V&T Railroad transported tourists to Virginia City. Therailroad brought prosperity to the region and soon Virginia City became the richest city per capita in the world.

When the transcontinental railroad was constructed in the late 1860s, it bypassed Virginia City in favor of Reno. This led to a decline in the city’s population and an increase in Reno’s. In an effort to bring the railroad through Virginia City, the local business owners funded the construction of a spur line from Reno. The gamble paid off and Virginia City’s population once again began to grow.

As the mining boom began to wane in the early 1900s, the population of Virginia City declined. The city of Reno also experienced a decline as the divorce rate increased and gambling was outlawed. This created an opportunity for the city of Sparks, which had been incorporated in 1905.

Sparks became a more attractive option for residents and businesses as it was located on the main railroad line and was not subject to the same gambling laws as Reno. The city continued to grow throughout the 20th century as the gaming industry developed in Reno. Today, Sparks is a thriving community with a diverse economy. The city is home to a number of large businesses, including Tesla, Amazon, and Walmart.
