History of Manchester (New Hampshire)
Manchester is a city located in southern New Hampshire, United States. The population was 109,565 at the 2010 census and it is the largest city in the state. Manchester is the county seat of Hillsborough County and lies within the Greater Boston metropolitan area. The Carriage City is home to three private colleges, the largest airport in the state, and professional sports teams. Manchester was first settled by Europeans in 1722 and was considered a part of Derryfield (now Goffstown). The first mill was established in 1723 on the Merrimack River and the first church was built in 1729. TheManchester town meeting granted money to build a bridge across the Merrimack River in 1746. The first bridge was completed in 1763. The town was home to several large mills, including the Manchester Print Works, which was the largest cotton mill in the world at one time.
