Sights in Lakehurst
Lakehurst is the borough in Ocean County, New Jersey that is home to Joint Base McGuireDixLakehurst. As of the 2010 United States Census, the borough’s population was 2,654,[8][9][10] reflecting an increase of 84 (+3.3%) from the 2,570 counted in the 2000 Census, which had in turn declined by 41 (1.6%) from the 2,611 counted in the 1990 Census.[19]
Lakehurst was incorporated as a borough by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on April 7, 1921, from portions of Manchester Township, based on the results of a referendum held on May 3, 1921.[20] The borough is named for its location near Lakehurst Naval Air Station.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough had a total area of 1.208 square miles (3.126 km2), including 1.155 square miles (2.990 km2) of land and 0.053 square miles (0.137 km2) of water (4.41%).[1][2] Lakehurst has the highest elevation of any municipality in Ocean County, at 260 feet (79 m) above sea level.[21]
The borough is located in the heart of the Pine Barrens, and is synonymous with the pinelands. The name “Lakehurst” is derived from its location near the lake formed by the damming of the Manasquan River.
The lake, which was originally known as “Bolger’s Pond”,[22] served as a reservoir for a local water company. When the dam was built, a small village sprang up around it, which became known as “Lakehurst”.[23] The lake was also used for recreation, and several hotels were built in the area to accommodate visitors.[23]
With the coming of the railroad in the 1870s, Lakehurst became a popular resort town, and several large hotels were built, including the Pinelands Hotel, the Lakehurst Hotel, and the Pinehurst Hotel.[23]
The United States Navy purchased Lakehurst Naval Air Station in 1917, and it became an important training facility during World War I. After the war, the base was downsized, but was reactivated in 1931 as a dirigible (blimp) station. The rigid airships Hindenburg and Akron used Lakehurst as their American base.[24]
On May 6, 1937, the Hindenburg caught fire and burned while attempting to land at the naval air station. Thirtysix people were killed in the accident, which remains the worst disaster in aviation history.[25]
Following the Hindenburg disaster, the Navy closed the air station. It was reopened in 1941 as a training facility for Navy blimp crews. The base was once again downsized at the end of the war.
In 1951, the Navy’s Balloon Training Unit moved from Lakehurst to nearby McGuire Air Force Base. The base was once again reactivated in 1954 as a training facility for helicopters. The Navy continued to use the base until 1997, when it was turned over to the Army and renamed “Fort Dixstock”.[26]
The Lakehurst Historical Society operates a museum devoted to the history of the borough. The museum is housed in the former Pinehurst Hotel, which was built in 1882 and operated as a hotel until 1916.[27]
The Lakehurst Max Demolition Landfill is a Superfund site located in the borough.[28]
History of Lakehurst
The first recorded European explorers to visit the area were the Dutch in 1614. They named the area after the city of Leiden in the Netherlands. The area remained largely undeveloped until the late 19th century when it became a popular summer resort for the wealthy. In 1879, a post office was established and the following year the Lakehurst Hotel was built.
Development really began to take off in earnest in the early 20th century with the construction of several large estates. In 1906, the Lakehurst Racetrack was built and became a popular destination for horse racing fans. The 1920s saw the construction of several more hotels and the establishment of an airport.
The city really came into its own in the 1930s with the construction of the Naval Air Station Lakehurst. This was the site of the infamous Hindenburg disaster in 1937. The airship caught fire while landing at the base, killing 36 people.
Despite this tragedy, the base remained an important part of the city throughout World War II and the Cold War. It was finally decommissioned in 1995.
Since then, the city has been working to rebrand itself as a tourist destination. It is now home to several museums, including the Bollinger County Museum of Natural History, and the Lakehurst Historical Society. It also hosts a weekly farmers market and a number of annual events, such as the Balloon Festival and the Bluegrass and Liberty Festival.
