Vineland is a city in Cumberland County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the city had a total population of 60,724, making it the state’s 12thlargest municipality, after having been the state’s 10thlargest municipality in 2000. Vineland, Millville, and Bridgeton are the three principal New Jersey cities of the VinelandMillvilleBridgeton Primary Metropolitan Statistical Area which encompasses those three cities and all of Cumberland County for statistical purposes and had a population of 156,898 as of the 2010 Census.

History of Vineland
Incorporated as a city in 1952, Vineland is located in Cumberland County, New Jersey. The city is named for Cornelius Van Slyke’s 1860s estate, Vineland Plantation. The South Jersey town was founded on July 1, 1861, on a stretch of land south of the Cohansey River that had been purchased by Van Slyke and Daniel Bassett from Charles Kinsley. The first street in Vineland was named “Landis Avenue” for Governor Charles Landis, who approved the city’s incorporation, and helped shepherd through its initial development.
The area that became Vineland was first developed by Dutch and Swedish farmers in the early 1600s. The land remained undeveloped and mostly rural until the mid19th century, when growth in nearby Millville and other southern New Jersey towns spurred interest in developing the area. In 1864, Vineland founder Charles Kinsley brought rail service to the area, making it easier to transport goods and people to and from the city.
Vineland’s proximity to the Atlantic Ocean and its location on the Richland Railroad made it a prime spot for businesses involved in the production of salt hay, cranberries, and otherOcean and bayrelated products. Canning factories, which began springing up in the 1870s, also made Vineland a prime location for food processing. The city became known as the “City of Industry.”
In the early 20th century, Vineland was home to several large estates belonging to wealthy industrialists and businessmen. These included West Jersey Home for Boys (now Cumberland Manor), the Edward J. Young estate, and the Landis Arboretum. The arrival of the DuPont Company in 1915 brought even more industry to the city, and by the mid20th century Vineland had emerged as a major manufacturing center.
The 1950s and 1960s saw a period of suburbanization and population growth in Vineland, as families moved to the city in search of affordable housing and a good quality of life. Since the early 21st century, Vineland has continued to grow, with new businesses and residential developments springing up throughout the city.
