Parsippany–Troy Hills is a Township in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the township’s population was 53,238, making it the 28thmost populous municipality in New Jersey.
The township was founded in 1928 from portions of Hanover Township, Morris Plains Borough, and ParsippanyDraperMelrose Park Terrace. Additional territory was annexed in 1933 from Randolph Township and in 1956 from Rockaway Township. ParsippanyTroy Hills gained its current name in 1986.
ParsippanyTroy Hills is the most populous municipality in Morris County. The name “Parsippany” comes from the Lenape Native American subtribe, which came to commonly be called the “Parsipanny Indians”, which means “the place where the river winds through the valley”. “Troy Hills” was added in 1986, after township voters approved a change to the official name. “Troy Hills” was chosen over other possible names, including “Lake Hiawatha”, “Mountain Lakes” and “Parsippany View”.
The township is informally divided into four neighborhoods: Lake Hiawatha, Parsippany, Troy Hills and Powerville. History of Parsippany–Troy Hills
ParsippanyTroy Hills was originally incorporated as a township on February 11, 1798. In 1837, the area was divided into two separate townships: Parsippany and Troy. In 1926, the two townships were merged to form the current township of ParsippanyTroy Hills.
The name “Parsippany” is derived from the Lenape Native American subtribe, which inhabited the area at the time of European settlement. The name “Troy” refers to the ancient city of Troy in Asia Minor, which was the site of the Trojan War.
The first European settlers in the area were Dutch farmers, who arrived in the early 1700s. In 1710, the first permanent European settlement was established at Horseneck, which is now part of Parsippany.
During the American Revolution, the area was a hotbed of antiBritish activity. On January 25, 1777, a group of resistance fighters known as the “Green Mountain Boys” burned down the home of Colonel Phillip Van Courtlandt, a Loyalist supporter.
In the early 1800s, Parsippany was a thriving agricultural community. However, the construction of the Morris Canal in the 1820s brought new prosperity to the area, as it became a major transportation route for goods and passengers between New York City and the Midwest.
ParsippanyTroy Hills was still a mostly rural area until the 1950s, when suburban development began to transform the landscape. The township has continued to grow in recent years, and is now home to over 50,000 residents.
