The origins of Santa Claus can be traced back to the early Christian Saint Nicholas. Saint Nicholas was a Greek bishop who lived in the 4th century. He was known for his generosity, and stories of his acts of kindness were popular in the Middle Ages. In the Dutch version of his legend, Saint Nicholas became known as “Sinterklaas,” and he eventually made his way to America via the Dutch settlement of New Amsterdam, which is now known as New York City.
In 1822, American author Washington Irving wrote a satirical work called “A History of New York,” in which he referred to Sinterklaas as the patron saint of the city. Irving’s work was instrumental in popularizing the legend of Sinterklaas in America.
The image of Santa Claus as we know it today was created by American artist Thomas Nast. Nast’s drawings of Santa Claus appeared in Harper’s Weekly magazine in the 1860s and 1870s, and he is credited with creating Santa’s signature red suit and white beard.
Santa Claus became firmly entrenched in American popular culture in the early 20th century, thanks in large part to the poems of Clement Clarke Moore and the songs of Irving Berlin.
