History of Macomb
Macomb, Illinois is a city in McDonough County, in the United States. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 19,288. Macomb is the county seat of McDonough County. It is home to Western Illinois University.
Macomb was first settled in 1829 by James Macomb, a veteran of the War of 1812. He built a log cabin on the west side of the Sangamon River. Macomb was designated as the county seat in 1831. The city was named for General Alexander Macomb, who was the commander of the United States Army during the War of 1812.
In 1865, the city was the site of a major confrontation during the Civil War, when Union troops clashed with a group of Confederate soldiers who had crossed the Mississippi River from Missouri. The Union troops were victorious, and the Confederates were forced to retreat back across the river.
During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Macomb grew rapidly, becoming a manufacturing center. The Western Illinois State Normal School (now Western Illinois University) was established in 1899.
In the 1940s, Camp Ellis, a World War II training facility, was located just outside of Macomb. After the war, the camp was converted into a housing development, which helped to spur the city’s growth even further.
