History of Glenview

The village of Glenview, Illinois is located about 20 miles north of downtown Chicago. The name “Glenview” is derived from the Scottish word “glen,” meaning narrow valley or ravine. The first settlers in the area were Scottish immigrants who arrived in the early 1800s.

The village of Glenview was formally established in 1834, and it was incorporated as a city in 1899. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Glenview was a popular summer resort destination for Chicagoans seeking to escape the heat and congestion of the city. The opening of the North Shore Channel in 1910 made Glenview even more accessible, and the village grew rapidly in the 1920s.

During World War II, Glenview was the site of a U.S. Naval Air Station. The base was closed in 1945, but it was later reopened as a private airfield. Today, the former airfield is home to the Chicago Executive Airport.
