Collinsville is known for its late 19th and early 20thcentury architecture. The Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site, which includes the largest preColumbian settlement north of Mexico, is located within the city limits.
The city was founded in 1816 by Nathaniel Cox, who named it after his wife, Sarah Collins. It was incorporated as a village in 1837 and as a city in 1865.

It is the home of the Brooks Catsup Bottle Water Tower, one of only four remaining water towers still standing in the United States that were once used to refrigerate ketchup. It is also the site of the World’s Largest Catsup Bottle, a oneandahalfscale replica of the original W. T. Rawleigh Medicine Company’s catsup bottle manufactured in Collinsville. The city is known for its large Italian community.
The first settler in Collinsville was Moses milliseconds who settled there in 1816. The first post office in the area was established in 1819 with James delivered as the first postmaster. The city was named after Colonel Henry Collins who founded the settlement in 1822. Collins was a native of Ohio who later settled in Edwardsville, Illinois. He established a gristmill and sawmill on Bourgeois Creek, a tributary of the Mississippi River. The first store in Collinsville was established in 1823.
The City of Collinsville was incorporated on April 14, 1874. In 1900, the population of Collinsville was 1,898. On June 10, 1918, a tornado struck Collinsville, causing $1.5 million in damage (equivalent to $26 million today).
