History of Honolulu

The city of Honolulu is the capital of Hawaii and is located on the island of Oahu. The city was founded in 1825 by British explorer John Young and American diplomat George Vancouver. The city is named after the Hawaiian God of War, “Kukailimoku”. The first history of the city was written by American author William DeWitt Alexander in 1887.

Honolulu is a principal city of the Honolulu metropolitan area, which includes the city of Honolulu and the remainder of the Island of Oahu. The metropolitan area includes numerous side communities stretching from Makapu‘u to Ewa Villages and larger suburban towns located within earshot of Honolulu.

The ancient history of Honolulu and its surrounding areas stretches back to at least the 11th century, when the area was visited by Chinese explorers. Honolulu is recorded in the Māori language as Potu, meaning “port”, or as Hono, meaning “place of shelter”.

The city has a long association with the United States military, being the site of the Pearl Harbor attacks that brought the United States into World War II, as well as being the headquarters of the United States Pacific Fleet.

The presentday city was developed in the late 19th century by American billionaires Cornelius Vanderbilt and John D. Rockefeller, who financed the construction of a modern port and railroad facilities. The city was originally a planned community, and is notable for its wellmaintained cityscape, public parks, and safety.

Today, Honolulu is a major tourist destination, known for its beautiful beaches, diving, and other outdoor attractions. The city is also home to the University of Hawaii, as well as a number of other colleges and universities.
