Idaho Falls is a city located in the state of Idaho in the western United States. The city is situated on the Snake River, and is the county seat of Bonneville County. Idaho Falls is the largest city in eastern Idaho, and is the principal city of the Idaho Falls, Idaho Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city was established in Eningia Falls, which was a naturally occurring waterfall on the Snake River, in Idaho Territory. The construction of the Minneapolis and St. Louis Railway through the area in 1864 brought new settlers to the area. The settlers named their new community “Eagle Rock”, which was later renamed to “Idaho Falls” in 1891. The name change was made to encourage new development in the area, as the word “Idaho” was thought to be a more marketable name than “Eagle Rock”.
