History of Anniston
Anniston is a city in northeastern Alabama, in the United States. As of the 2010 census, the population of the city was 23,106. The city is the county seat of Calhoun County and one of two urban centers/principal cities of and included in the AnnistonOxford Metropolitan Statistical Area.
Anniston was founded in 1872, named after Annie Scott, the only child of John Tyler, the president of the Confederate States of America. The city developed as an industrial center during the late 19th century, especially in the railroad industry, because of its strategic location at the junction of several major railroads. It was once called “The Magic City” because of its rapid growth and development during the late 19th century.
Highway 21 runs through downtown Anniston, and I20 bypasses the city to the south. The Silver Comet Trail, a multiuse trail made from a former railroad line, runs from just west of the city center north to the Georgia state line. The Woodstock Festival, held on the campus of Anniston’s Blue Mountain College in 1969, is considered one of the seminal events of the counterculture movement.
