History of Phoenixville
Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, is located in Chester County, about 45 miles west of Philadelphia. The borough has a population of 16,440, as of the 2010 census. It is the site of an iron and steel company that played a significant role in the American industrial revolution.
The area now known as Phoenixville was originally inhabited by the Lenape people. The first Europeans to settle in the area were Quakers, who established a community in the early 18th century.
In 1793, ironmaster Isaac Potts built a forge on the Schuylkill River. The forge wasdestroyed by fire in 1810, but was rebuilt by Potts’ son, William. The rebuilt forgeF operated until 1876.
The iron and steel industry was a major driver of Phoenixville’s growth in the 19th century. The town was home to several iron and steel companies, including the American Iron and Steel Company, which was founded in 1854.
