History of Millville

Millville is a city in Cumberland County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the city’s population was 28,400, making it the state’s 55thmost populous municipality. The earliest known permanent settlement at Millville dates to 1615, when Augustine Herman erected a homestead along with a gristmill and sawmill on the banks of the Maurice River. The area was originally known as “Maurice River Township” and was incorporated as one of New Jersey’s initial 104 townships by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on February 21, 1798. On March 1, 1807, the township was renamed as “Millville Township”, after Samuel W. Mills, a local landowner and developer.

The Millville Manufacturing Company was created in 1848 as the first company to attempt to manufacture cotton thread on an industrial scale in the United States. The company produced silk thread and ribbons, mostly by convict labor brought from the Philadelphia County Prison. The company had business connections with leading Abolitionists. The firm eventually closed when its chief financial backer, Quaker millionaire Stephen Girard, died in 1831.

In 1865, the leads from St. Michael the Archangel Church were stolen, probably for their scrap value. The church was abandoned in 1876 after the diocese closed it due to a dwindling congregation. The building was torn down in the 1980s, despite repeated attempts by preservationists to save it.

In the early 20th century, Millville became known for its glassmaking industry, which produced handblown glassware, lamps and other decorative items. The Glasboro Glass Factory was the first manufacturing company in the United States to make allglass marbles on a commercial scale. The company operated from 1909 to 1911, when it went out of business due to competition from Japanese factories.

The Millville Army Air Field was constructed in 1941 as a military training facility. It was the site of the country’s first peacetime loss of a military aircraft when, on October 12, 1941, a Navy BE1 bomber crashed while attempting to land. The base was closed in 1945 and sold to the city in 1947.

The Millville Municipal Airport, also known as Joe Russomanno Field, opened in 1952 on the site of the former Army airfield. It is now the only general aviation airport in Cumberland County and serves as a reliever airport for Philadelphia International Airport.

The city’s economy began to change in the late 20th century, as manufacturing jobs declined and distribution and service jobs grew. Millville became home to a number of call centers and distribution warehouses. In the 21st century, the city’s largest employers are Inspira Health Network and WheatonArts.
