History of Bedford (New York)
Bedford, officially the Town of Bedford, is a town located in Westchester County, New York, U.S. The population was 17,335 at the 2010 census.
The town of Bedford was founded on December 27, 1680, when a group of English Puritans led by Richard Mather and John Cotton, who had migrated from Boston in the Massachusetts Bay Colony, purchased a large tract of land west of the Hudson River from the Mohegan Indians. They named the town after theBedfordshire town whence many of them had come.
Initially a farming community, Bedford in time came to host many fine estates, built by wealthy New Yorkers who retreated here from the city to escape the heat in summertime. Gilded Age mogul Jay Gould built a elaborate country home, Lynbrook, in Bedford. Several other millionaires built mansions in the town in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, including Mary Patten Chanler (Rokeby), Stuyvesant Fish (Ophir Hall), Frank Crowninshield (Crestwood), and Hamilton McKown Twombly (Tanglewood).
The town has been overhauled several times, most recently in the late 1990s, when itsstop on the MetroNorth Railroad’s Harlem Line was moved from the village of Katonah to nearby Mount Kisco.
In the early 21st century, Bedford has evolved into a bedroom community for uppermiddleclass families who work in New York City. Many residents commute to jobs in the city, while others support the local economy. The town’s schools are highly ranked, and its recreational facilities include several golf courses, horsebackriding trails, and parks.
The Old Graveyard in Bedford Village is the final resting place for many residents of the town, including Georgia O’Keeffe, Ruth Keeler, and William Sheppard. The Bedford Free Library, founded in 1787, is one of the oldest public libraries in the country.
