History of Passaic
The first European to settle in the area wasreputedly a Dutchman named Jan Huybertse Acker in 1678, although the first settlement was not established until 1763 when 600 Palatine Germans settled in the area, fleeing religious persecution at home. In 1781, Alexander Hamilton visited Passaic and proposed opening the Clifton section of the town for a copper mine; he wanted to mine the rich deposits of copper ore that were known to exist in the area. However, no action was taken on Hamilton’s proposal and it was not until 1833 that the town’s first copper mine was opened on First Mountain (now Totowa Mountain). The Passaic Iron and Steel Company was also established in 1837, specializing in the production of rails for the rapidly growing railroad industry.
In 1854, the Morris Canal and Banking Company built the Morris Canal, which ran through Passaic, and the first shipment of iron ore from northern New Jersey was transported on the canal to Easton, Pennsylvania. This spurred further industrial development in the area, which was already home to a number of mills and factories. The canals were eventually replaced by railroads as the primary means of transportation of goods, but the effects of the industrial revolution can still be seen in the town today.
Passaic was incorporated as a city in 1873, and rapidly grew in the following years. The population of the city exploded in the late 19th century, largely due to immigration from Southern and Eastern Europe. By 1900, the population had reached 101,000, and continued to grow rapidly in the first half of the 20th century.
