History of Honaunau
Honaunau is a small unincorporated community and censusdesignated place (CDP) in Hawaii County, Hawaii, United States. The population was 1,062 at the 2010 census. Honaunau is located on the southern coast of the island of Hawaii on Honaunau Bay. It is about 12mi south of KailuaKona.
The area around Honaunau was once the seat of the Hawaiian Kingdom, with royal palaces located in the nearby uplands. The town was the site of the Battle of Honaunau during the time of King Kamehameha I, which resulted in the unification of the Hawaiian Islands.
After the kingdom was abolished and Hawaii became a territory of the United States, Honaunau became a popular destination for tourists, as it was home to the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and the annual Merrie Monarch Festival. The town declined in popularity after the festival was moved to Hilo in 1971, but has seen a resurgence in recent years with the growth of the ecotourism industry.
The first European to visit Honaunau was British explorer James Cook, who anchored his ship, the HMS Resolution, in the bay in 1778. He named the area ” Mercy Bay.”
The next recorded European to visit the area was French explorer JeanFrançois de La Pérouse, who arrived in 1786. La Pérouse was not impressed with the area, describing it as “a arid and sterile country.”
American missionaries arrived in 1820, and by 1823, there were two churches and a schoolhouse in the area.
Honaunau became an important center for the Kingdom of Hawaii under King Kamehameha I, who made it his capital in 1812. A large heiau (temple) was built in the nearby uplands, and the kings of Hawaii, including Kamehameha II and Kamehameha III, all spent time in Honaunau.
The area was the site of the Battle of Honaunau in 1819, in which Kamehameha I defeated his enemies, unifying the Hawaiian Islands.
