History of Sanford
Sanford is a city in the central part of the U.S. state of North Carolina and is the county seat of Lee County. The city’s population was 28,094 at the 2010 census. It is the principal city of the Sanford, North Carolina Micropolitan Statistical Area, which is much smaller than the GreensboroWinstonSalemHigh Point CSA.
The first European settlement in what is now Lee County was made in 1754 by John and William Grange, though it is unclear exactly where they settled. In 1766, they received a land grant from the King of England and constructed a log cabin on the banks of the Cape Fear River. The community that sprang up around the cabin was known as Grange’s Settlement.
By the early 1800s, Grange’s Settlement had become a thriving community with a tavern, a courthouse, and a number of shops and homes. In 1824, the name of the community was changed to Sanford in honor of Col. Joel Lane, who had donated land for the founding of the town.
Sanford was officially incorporated as a town in 1874. By this time, the town had grown quite a bit and included several churches, a school, and a number of businesses.
The years following the Civil War were ones of growth and prosperity for Sanford. The town became a regional transportation hub, with several railroad lines passing through. The railroad influx brought new industry and businesses to the area, and the population continued to grow.
In the early 1900s, Sanford experienced a period of challenging economic times. A number of businesses closed, and the population began to decline.
The Great Depression hit Sanford hard, but the town began to rebound in the late 1930s. The construction of the Glenaire substation of Duke Power’s hydroelectric project on the Catawba River brought new jobs and economic growth to the area.

After the war, Sanford continued to grow and prosper. The late 20th century saw the construction of a number of new schools and parks, as well as the revitalization of the downtown area. The population of Sanford has remained relatively stable in recent years, and the town continues to be a thriving community in central North Carolina.
