History of Fernandina Beach

Fernandina Beach is a city on Amelia Island in Nassau County, Florida, United States. The city is Fernandina Beach’s oldest city, and one of the oldest continuously inhabited municipalities in the United States. It is named for King Ferdinand VII of Spain and lies on the Florida mainland, just south of the Georgia border.

The area was first inhabited by the Timucua Indians and then later by the Yamasee. In 1562, French Huguenot explorer Jean Ribault became the first European to see the island, which he named after King Charles IX’s queen consort, Catherine de Medici. However, it was Spanish explorer Pedro Menéndez de Avilés who ultimately established a settlement on the island in 1565, which he christened San Carlos. This settlement served as the capital of the Spanish colony of Florida from 1566 to 1569.

In 1702, a raid by the English privateer Rebecca scattered the Spanish settlers. Amelia Island was turned over to the British, who used it as a base of operations during the War of Jenkins’ Ear with Spain. The British built Fort William on the island, which they occupied from 1726 to 1763.

In 1784, Florida was returned to Spain, and Amelia Island once again became a Spanish possession. The fort was renamed Fort San Carlos. The island remained in Spanish hands until 1821, when it was ceded to the United States as part of the AdamsOnís Treaty.

The town of Fernandina was established on Amelia Island in 1811 and served as the county seat of Nassau County from 1824 to 1854. The city was named for King Ferdinand VII of Spain and served as the capital of Florida from 1820 to 1821. It was platted by surveyor William E. Gates and was first incorporated in 1812, but its charter was later dissolved. The city was reincorporated in 1828, and again in 1887.

Fernandina Beach was once a bustling harbor town, filled with warehouses, wharves, and shipyards. The city was a major point of entry for immigrants coming to America in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Many of the buildings in the historic district date from this period.

The Great Depression and World War II dealt a blow to the city’s economy, and by the mid20th century, the city had declined. However, in recent years, the city has undergone a renaissance, with the restoration of many of its historic buildings and the revitalization of its downtown.

Today, Fernandina Beach is a thriving community with a quaint, oldfashioned feel. The city’s downtown is filled with shops, restaurants, and cafes, and its beaches are a popular destination for tourists and locals alike.
