History of Gainesville (Georgia)
Gainesville is a city in and the county seat of Hall County, Georgia, United States. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 33,804. By 2015 the estimated population was 38,712. Because of its large number of poultry processing plants, it is often called the “Poultry Capital of the World”.
Gainesville was established as Mule Camp Springs by EuropeanAmerican settlers in the early 1800s. It was renamed after General Edmund P. Gaines, a hero of the War of 1812. The city Gainesville was incorporated on December 19, 1821.
Florida Governor William P. Duval declared the town the seat of Alachua County in 1824; the county had been created a few months earlier. This resulted in a prolonged legal battle that was not settled until 1854 when the United States Supreme Court ruled in favor of Gainesville.
In 1864, during the American Civil War, a unit of the Union Army occupied the town to protect its railroad. On April 12, 1865, Union troops marched into Gainesville and burned a large portion of the town. This is referred to as the Gainesville Affair.
On August 16, 1936, an AfricanAmerican man named Jesse Owens won his fourth gold medal at the Berlin Olympic Games, much to the chagrin of Adolf Hitler who had hoped that the Aryan “master race” would dominate the games. Owens’ hometown of Gainesville held a tickertape parade in his honor upon his return.
