History of Melbourne

Melbourne, originally known as “Crane Creek”, was founded in 1867 by former slaves. The city’s name was changed to Melbourne in 1869. Melbourne was incorporated as a city in 1882.

The city of Melbourne is located on Florida’s Space Coast, in Brevard County. The city is home to the main campus of Florida Institute of Technology and has a population of about 76,000 people.

The area where Melbourne is located was originally inhabited by the Ais Indian tribe. The Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de Leon is thought to have landed near Melbourne in 1513. However, no permanent settlements were established in the area until the mid19th century.

In 1867, a group of former slaves from Georgia and South Carolina founded a settlement on the banks of Crane Creek. The settlers named their community “Crane Creek” after the creek which ran through it.

In 1869, the city’s name was changed to Melbourne in honor of its English namesake. Melbourne was incorporated as a city in 1882.

During the 1930s and 1940s, Melbourne was a popular tourist destination. The city’s beaches and hotels attracted visitors from all over the country.

However, the city’s popularity as a tourist destination declined after the Second World War. In the 1950s and 1960s, many of the city’s hotels and motels were converted into retirement homes.

In recent years, Melbourne has undergone something of a renaissance. The city’s historic downtown area has been revitalized and there is now a growing arts and culture scene. The city is also home to a number of hightech companies.
