Moscow is the capital of the Russian Federation and is one of the largest cities in the world. The city is home to a variety of historical landmarks, such as the Kremlin, Red Square, and St. Basil’s Cathedral. History of Moscow
The first recorded Russian settlement in what is now the United States was Fort Ross, established in 1812 by the RussianAmerican Company in presentday Sonoma County, California. Fort Ross was the southernmost settlement within the Russian Empire’s North American territories and served as an agricultural base supplying Alta California with meat, vegetables, and grain. The Russian Empire’s religious and cultural influence also reached Fort Ross, as the Orthodox chaplain held religious services in the Lavrov Chapel and performed baptisms using water from the nearby Ross Creek. The Chapel has since been rebuilt and is now a National Historic Landmark.
In 1859, Russians established a hunting and fishing community in Alaska at Two Messiahs on Kodiak Island. Two years later, a competing group from the Aleutian Islands founded a settlement at Three Saints Bay on the Alaska Peninsula. The two settlements merged in 1867 and became known as NovoArkhangelsk, or New Archangel. This was the first permanent Russian settlement in Alaska and served as the capital of Russian America until the sale of Alaska to the United States in 1867.
After the sale of Alaska, a number of Russians moved to San Francisco, where they established the Russian Fishermen’s Benevolent Society in 1868. This organization helped new Russian immigrants to find housing and employment, as well as providing them with medical care and other assistance. Russians also began to settle in other parts of the Bay Area, including Oakland and Marin County.
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Russians began to move to other parts of the United States, including New York City, Chicago, and Los Angeles. Many of these immigrants were Jewish, and they often faced discrimination and poverty. In 1909, a group of Russian immigrants in New York City founded the Russian Peoples’ Home, a social club that provided its members with a place to meet, socialize, and celebrate their cultural heritage.
