History of Menlo Park (California)
Menlo Park is a city located in San Mateo County, California, United States, with a population of 35,209 as of 2019. It is one of the most affluent cities in the San Francisco Bay Area and is the headquarters of several hightech companies such as Facebook, SolarCity, Draper Fisher Jurvetson, and Franklin Templeton Investments.
The city was named after Menlo Park, New Jersey, by railroad magnate Leland Stanford, who built his country estate there and established Stanford University nearby. Menlo Park has been called the ” birthplace of Silicon Valley”, as it was home to the world’s first hightech company, the Jobs’ Garage.
In the early 1800s, the land that is now Menlo Park was part of Rancho de las Pulgas, a Mexican land grant of 7,300 acres (29 km2) given to the Arrillaga family. The rancho included much of the presentday San Francisco Peninsula, including the sites of Stanford University and Facebook. In 1854, Daniel Cutter bought Rancho de las Pulgas from the Arrillagas, and in 1856 he opened a tavern called “The Half Way House” between San Francisco and San Jose, on the El Camino Real (now US 101).
The 650acre (2.6 km2) tract was bounded by presentday Willow Road (to the north), bayfront marshland (to the south and east), and Adobe Creek (to the west). In 1857, Menlo Park was renamed byCutter after his friend and former student, Levi Stanford (son of Leland Stanford).
By the 1860s, Menlo Park had become a stop on the stagecoach line between San Francisco and San Jose, with Cutter’s tavern serving as a stagecoach inn. The county seat of San Mateo County moved from San Mateo to Redwood City in 1856, and Menlo Park served as the county’s courthouse, with an adjacent jail.
In 1863, Leland Stanford purchased 650 acres (2.6 km2) of land in the area of Menlo Park for his country estate, which he named “Stanford Park”. Some of the land was used for Stanford University, which opened in 1891.
In the 1880s, Menlo Park became the home of the developers of the Southern Pacific Railroad’s Peninsula extension, which delivered redwood lumber from the Santa Cruz Mountains to San Francisco. The creators of the line were Stanford alumni: Collis P. Huntington, Charles Crocker, and Mark Hopkins.
In 1887, the town of Menlo Park was incorporated, with a population of about 500 people. The original boundaries were Alameda de las Pulgas (now Willow Road) to the north, San Francisquito Creek to the south,101 to the east, and Bay Road (now Bayfront Expressway) to the west.
In 1906, the San Francisco earthquake damaged Menlo Park’s business district, which was rebuilt with new construction that followed the city’s original grid plan.
The devastation caused by the 1906 earthquake led to the creation of San Francisco’s planning commission and the development of the city’s first zoning regulations. The need for zoning in Menlo Park was driven by anxieties about the concentration of industries and housing in the nearby city of Palo Alto.
In 1910, Menlo Park’s residents voted to move the town’s boundaries east of the San Francisco and San Jose Railroad tracks, to include the Stanford campus and the new industrial area known as Belle Haven. This expansion nearly doubled the size of Menlo Park, making it more than three times its original size.
The Belle Haven neighborhood was developed in the 1920s as a residential community for Stanford faculty and staff. It remains one of the most desirable neighborhoods in Menlo Park.
The City of Menlo Park was incorporated in 1927. The city’s first mayor was George W. Peck, who served from 1927 to 1931.
In the 1930s, Menlo Park continued to grow as a bedroom community for Stanford and the Peninsula’s burgeoning industries. The city’s population more than tripled between 1930 and 1940, from about 2,000 to about 6,700.
During World War II, Menlo Park was home to a major hospital for treating wounded soldiers (Letterman General Hospital). The hospital closed in 1994 and the site is now the headquarters for the Department of Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care System.
After the war, Menlo Park’s population continued to grow, reaching nearly 10,000 by 1950. The city was racially and ethnically diverse, with a large population of ItalianAmerican, Jewish, and AsianAmerican residents.
