Milford is a seaside city located in New Haven County, Connecticut, United States, on Long Island Sound, 33 miles (53 km) from the ConnecticutNew York border. The population was 52,759 at the 2010 census.
In 1639, the Dutch founded a trading post called a “fort” near the site of modern Milford. The fort was named Fort Hoop (Dutch: Blockhuys), after the equipment used to build the fort. It was the first Dutch fort built in the New World. It was designed by the naval architect Simon Stirling. The fort was captured by the English in June 1665 during the Second AngloDutch War. The fort was recovered on September 18, 1673, during the Third AngloDutch War. The fort was abandoned by the Dutch in 1674, and it was burned to the ground in 1676.
The town of Milford was incorporated in 1784.

History of Milford (Connecticut)
Milford is a city located in southwestern Connecticut in New Haven County. The city is situated on Long Island Sound and its harbor estuary, the Housatonic River. It is considered part of the New York metropolitan area. The population of Milford was estimated to be 52,759 in 2019.
The area now known as Milford was first settled by the English in 1639 as a part of the New Haven Colony. The town was originally known as Wepawaug, after the local Wepawaug Indian tribe. The name was changed to Milford in 1784.
The city played an important role in the American Revolutionary War. It was here that the celebrated “Water Fight” took place on April 25, 1777. Colonel Henry Knowlton and his troops surprised and defeated a British foraging party led by General William Tryon.
During the 19th century, Milford developed into a thriving center for shipbuilding and other maritime industries. The city also became a popular summer resort for wealthy New Yorkers. In 1885, the New Haven and Derby Railroad Company built a branch line from New Haven to Milford, which spurred further economic growth.
