EL DORADO, Kan. — A small city in Kansas with a population of just over 26,000 people, El Dorado is the county seat of Butler county. The city is located in the Flint Hills region of Kansas, and is home to a number of historic buildings and sites.
The first thing that visitors to El Dorado will notice is the large number of oil wells throughout the city. El Dorado was once a major center for oil production in the United States, and though production has declined in recent years, the city is still home to a number of working oil wells.
The historic downtown area of El Dorado is home to a number of interesting shops and businesses. The Beehive Store is a local landmark, and has been in business since 1879. The store is known for its unique honeycombshaped ceiling, and sells a variety of local honey products.

History of El Dorado
It is possible that the first Europeans to hear of El Dorado were members of Francisco Vásquez de Coronado’s expedition. In 1541, while traveling through presentday Kansas near the Great Bend of the Arkansas River, his men heard natives discussing a “great city of gold” called Wakanda. The legend of El Dorado went on to capture the imaginations of Spanish explorers and others who searched South America for the fabled city.
The legend may have its roots in history. In the 1530s, the Spanish conquistador Gonzalo Pizarro heard tales of an indigenous ruler who covered himself with gold dust. Pizarro eventually captured Atahualpa, the last emperor of the Inca Empire, and demanded a ransom for his release. The Inca filled a room with gold and silver objects, but Pizarro still executed Atahualpa.
The legend of El Dorado grew as more Europeans arrived in South America in search of wealth. In the 1600s, French explorer Pierre L’Enfant claimed to have found the city after being led there by an indigenous guide. L’Enfant reported that the streets were lined with gold, but he was unable to lead anyone back to the city.
Other explorers, including Sir Walter Raleigh and Sir Francis Drake, also searched for El Dorado. Raleigh even brought back Native Americans he had captured in an attempt to get them to reveal the location of the city. None of these attempts was successful.
The legend of El Dorado faded in the late 1800s, but it was revived in the 1920s when explorers discovered rich gold mines in the jungles of South America. Many people believe that El Dorado is not a physical place, but rather a symbol of the wealth and possibilities that can be found in the Americas.
