History of Hollywood (California)
The city of Hollywood, California, was incorporated in 1903 and officially became a city in 1910. The region that is now known as Hollywood was originally inhabited by Native Americans, specifically the Tongva people. The first European settlers to the area were the Spanish, who established missions in the area in the late 1700s.
After California became a part of the United States in 1848, the area began to attract American settlers. The first American settler to the Hollywood area was a man named E.C. Porter, who arrived in 1853. Porter built a log cabin on the site that is now known as Highland Avenue.
In 1857, another American settler, David W. Cowl, arrived in the area and laid out a townsite, which he named Hollywood. Cowl sold his interest in the town in 1887. The city of Hollywood was officially incorporated in 1903.
The early years of Hollywood were quite rough. The city was often embroiled in disputes with neighboring communities, and it struggled to find a viable economic base. In the early 1900s, Hollywood did find some success as a agriculture community, but this was shortlived.
