The largest of these mounds, the Big Mound, is more than 70 feet tall and 950 feet in circumference. The people who built these mounds were part of the Mississippian culture, which was prevalent in the Mississippi River Valley from about 1000 AD to 1500 AD.

The first European settlers in the Maryville area were French farmers who came here in the early 1800s to farm the rich bottomland along the Nodaway River. The town of Maryville was founded in 1845 and named after Mary Stephenson, the wife of the town’s first postmaster.

Maryville soon became a thriving riverfront community with a thriving agricultural economy. The coming of the railroad in 1859 further spurred economic growth. Maryville was incorporated as a city in 1872.

The early years of the city were marked by a series of devastating floods, the most damaging of which occurred in 1881. The city was rebuilt after each flood, and Maryville continued to grow and prosper.

In the early 1900s, Maryville became known as the “Queen City of the Northwest” because of its booming economy and its status as a regional center of commerce and industry. Maryville’s population grew to more than 10,000 people by the 1920s.

The Great Depression hit Maryville hard, but the city soon rebounded and continued to grow throughout the second half of the 20th century.
