History of Tarrytown
Tarrytown is a village in the town of Greenburgh in Westchester County, New York, United States. It is located on the eastern bank of the Hudson River, about 30 miles (48 km) north of midtown Manhattan in New York City, and is served by a stop on the MetroNorth Hudson Line. To the north of Tarrytown is the village of Sleepy Hollow (made famous by Washington Irving’s The Legend of Sleepy Hollow), to the south the village of Irvington, and to the east unincorporated parts of the town of Mount Pleasant.
The Tappan Native Americans were the first known residents of the area now known as Tarrytown. Sleeping Hollow is first recorded in the Van Cortlandt family papers of which date back to 1685. This English family acquired land along the Hudson from the Dutch in 1684 and by 1712 owning 150,000 acres throughout Westchester and lower New York state. Frederick Philipse, the patroon, had a toll bridge across the Hudson which the Native Americans used to cross over to sell their pelts in New York City, then known by the Dutch name of New Amsterdam.
In 1780, during the American Revolutionary War, Major John André was arrested as a spy in Tarrytown, and was subsequently hanged. André, a British army officer, was traveling south through Westchester on the Albany Post Road when he was stopped and searched by three militiamen from Tarrytown, who found incriminating papers hidden in his boot. He was turned over to General George Washington, and later tried and convicted of espionage. He was executed by hanging on October 2, 1780, at Tappan Landing in Tarrytown.
The Great Depression of the 1930s struck the village hard. Many residents were forced to move away to find work, leaving behind a large number of abandoned properties. The local economy began to turn around in the late 1930s with the establishment of the General Motors Assembly Plant in North Tarrytown. The plant eventually covered more than 1,000 acres (4 km²) and employed over 30,000 workers. It was closed in 1996.
