History of Prescott
Prescott is a city in Yavapai County, Arizona, United States. In 1864, it was the territorial capital of Arizona. It is the county seat of Yavapai County. The population of Prescott as of 2018 was 42,253.
The town was named after William H. Prescott, an American historian and author who wrote a highly influential history of the early European settlements in the Americas.
Prescott was founded on July 4, 1864, as the capital of the Arizona Territory. The Territorial Legislature met here until Phoenix became the capital in 1889. Prescott soon became a bustling frontier town with many stores and businesses.
During the 1870s and 1880s, gold and silver were discovered in the nearby mountains, and Prescott became the center of activity for prospectors and miners. In 1877, the Historic Fort Whipple was built to protect the settlers from Indian attacks.
By 1900, Prescott had a population of 5,000, and it was designated as the county seat of Yavapai County.
In 1918, the U.S. Army established the Fort Huachuca military base southwest of Prescott. During World War II, the fort was used as a training ground for troops heading to the Pacific Theater.
