History of Cordova
Cordova is a city in Tennessee, United States. The population was 9,049 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greater Memphis metropolitan area.
Cordova was founded in 1835 by Daniel Gwynn and Joel Hester as a farming community on the old Raleighprison farm. It was originally named Allentown after a local Publix grocery store. The name was later changed to Cordova after the relocation of the Shelby County courthouse to that site. The building still stands and is now known as the Old Courthouse Museum.
State legislators had moved the county seat from Raleigh to Memphis in 1824, but Raleigh continued to be used as a jail. In 1835, the county built a new jail in Cordova and leased it to the state. The first state prisoner arrived in 1836. In 1839, the county bought the jail from the state and expanded it to include a courthouse. This made Cordova the county seat once again.
In the late 1830s and early 1840s, Cordova was a thriving community with a population of about 400. The Memphis and Ohio Railroad reached the town in 1852, and it soon became a shipping point for agricultural products. The first bank opened in 1855, and the first school was built in 1857.
Cordova grew rapidly in the early 20th century. The population was 1,300 in 1907 and 3,015 in 1940. The town was annexed by the city of Memphis in 1946.
Today, Cordova is a suburb of Memphis with a population of over 9,000. It is home to numerous schools, parks, businesses, and churches. The Annual Corn Festival is held every September, and the Old Courthouse Museum is open to the public.
