Vacation in Forrest City

When most people think of Arkansas, the first thing that comes to mind is probably the Ozarks. And while the Ozarks – with their stunning array of mountains, lakes, and forests – are definitely a big part of what makes the Natural State so special, there’s much more to Arkansas than just its majestic mountains. Take, for example, Forrest City. This charming small city, located in the eastern part of the state, is a great place to enjoy a laidback vacation full of history, culture, and outdoor recreation.

Forrest City was founded in 1842 and named for General Nathan Bedford Forrest, who played a pivotal role in the early history of the city. Today, Forrest City is home to just over 16,000 people, but it still has a rich history and culture. The downtown area is full of quaint shops, restaurants, and cafes, and there are a number of historical sites to explore, including the restored Forrest City Armory and the Dortch Stables, which date back to the city’s early days as a stop on the Butterfield Overland Mail stagecoach route.

If you’re looking for a little adventure, Forrest City is also a great place to enjoy the great outdoors. The St. Francis National Forest, which surrounds the city, offers miles of hiking and biking trails, as well as opportunities for canoeing, kayaking, fishing, and birdwatching. And if you’re feeling really adventurous, you can even go on a guided horseback ride through the forest.

Whether you’re looking to relax or explore, Forrest City is a great place to spend a few days. So if you’re looking for a unique vacation destination that’s off the beaten path, be sure to add Forrest City to your list!

History of Forrest City

The city of Forrest City, Arkansas owes its existence to two men: Jean Baptiste Dardenne and Thomas Love. In 18 17, Dardenne, a French Canadian, established a trading post on the St. Francis River, in what is now southeast Arkansas. The post quickly became popular with Americans who were moving west into Arkansas and Louisiana. Three years later, Love, an American, bought the post from Dardenne. Love’s Station, as it was then called, became a wellknown stopping point for migrants headed to Texas.

The area around Love’s Station was largely unsettled until the 1850s. In 1852, a man named John Forrest established a plantation on the north bank of the St. Francis River. Forrest’s plantation soon became the largest in the area, and the small community that developed around it took on his name. In 1854, the first post office in Forrest City was established.

By the 1860s, Forrest City had become a thriving community. The population had grown to over 500, and the town had a number of businesses, including hotels, stores, and a newspaper. The town was also home to a number of churches and schools.

The civil war had a significant impact on Forrest City. The town was occupied by Union troops in 1862 and 1863. Forrest City was also the site of a major battle in July 1864, when a Confederate force tried to retake the town. The Battle of Forrest City was a victory for the Union, and helped solidify Union control of southeast Arkansas.

After the war, Forrest City continued to grow. The population reached 1,500 by the early 1870s. A number of new businesses were established, and the town became an important shipping point for the surrounding area. The Forrest City Times, the town’s newspaper, was established in 1873.

In 1874, the St. Francis levee district was established, and work began on a levee system that would protect Forrest City from flooding. The levees were completed in 1879, and have since been widened and improved several times.

Forrest City was officially incorporated as a town in 1875. The town continued to grow in the late 1800s, and its population reached 2,500 by 1900. A number of new businesses were established, including several sawmills and lumber companies.

The twentieth century was a period of continued growth for Forrest City. The population reached 5,000 by 1920, and the town continued to attract new businesses. In the 1950s, a number of industries, such as garment manufacturing, were established in Forrest City. The population reached 10,000 in 1960.

Since the 1960s, Forrest City has continued to grow. The population is now over 15,000, and the town is home to a number of businesses and industries. Forrest City is also the site of a campus of the University of Arkansas.
