The city was founded in 1873 by Colonel John G. Cullmann, a German immigrant. Cullmann had formerly lived in Louisiana, where he had been a planter and slaveowner. He moved to Alabama in 1872 to become a cotton farmer. The city of Cullman was incorporated in 1874.
