Sierra Vista is a city in Arizona. The city is located in Cochise County in the southeastern part of the state. Sierra Vista is about 75 miles (121 km) southeast of Tucson and about 50 miles (80 km) north of the Mexico border.
The city was founded in 1902 as a ranching and farming community. The city grew rapidly during World War II because of the establishment of nearby military bases. Fort Huachuca, an Army post, is the largest employer in the city.
Sierra Vista has a semiarid climate. Summers are hot, with temperatures often above 100 °F (38 °C). Winters are mild, with highs typically in the 60s °F (upper teens °C). Spring and fall are pleasant, with highs in the 80s °F (27–30 °C) and cool nights.

History of Sierra Vista
The city of Sierra Vista in Arizona was founded in 1856 by John Bradshaw. The city was originally a part of Mexico and was ceded to the United States in the 1848 Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo which ended the MexicanAmerican War. The city was then part of the Arizona Territory until 1912 when the state of Arizona was admitted to the Union.
Sierra Vista was originally a part of the San Carlos Apache Indian Reservation established in 1872. In 1880, the reservation was divided into five parts, four of which were opened up to white settlement by executive order of President Rutherford B. Hayes. The city of Sierra Vista was founded on March 16, 1856 by John Bradshaw, who built a adobe house near Wilcox Creek. The first post office in the area was established in 1857. In 1858, the Butterfield Overland Mail stagecoach route passed through the area.
The American Civil War began in 1861 and in 1862 the Confederate States of America occupied the Mesilla Valley including Sierra Vista. The Union Army retook the area in March of 1862 and it remained in Union hands for the rest of the war. Bradshaw’s Ranch served as a Union Army outpost during the conflict. In 1866, the United States Army established Fort Huachuca 3 miles (5 km) from the city to help protect settlers from Apache raids.
Sierra Vista remained a small settlement for many years, but began to grow after the construction of the Southern Pacific Railroad through the area in 1880. The city was incorporated in 1902. The population of Sierra Vista grew rapidly during World War II as the Army expanded Fort Huachuca. The city continued to grow after the war with the development of new residential neighborhoods.
Today, Sierra Vista is known for its beautiful weather, central location, and outdoor recreation opportunities. The city is home to several military bases, including Fort Huachuca, and is a popular retirement destination.
