History of Haines
Haines was originally settled by the Tlingit people in around 1000 AD. In 1799, it was visited by the naturalist John Muir, who commented on its spectacular beauty. In 1869, a Presbyterian missionary named William Duncan established a mission there, which led to a permanent EuropeanAmerican settlement.
During the late 19th century, Haines became a popular stop for prospectors headed to the Klondike Gold Rush, and a major supply point for those working in the nearby mines. It was also the site of a large sawmill, which supplied lumber for the construction of the Alaska Railroad.
In 1902, the town was incorporated as a city, and in 1903 it was chosen as the terminus of the Alaska Railroad. This made it an important gateway to Alaska, and it flourished as a result.
During World War II, Haines was used as a base for the construction of the Alaska Highway, and it continued to grow in the postwar years. Today, it is a thriving community of just over 2,000 people, known for its stunning scenery, outdoor activities, and smalltown charm.
