History of High Point
High Point is a city located in the Piedmont Triad region of the state of North Carolina. The city is noted for its furniture, textiles, and bus manufacturing. As of the 2010 census, the city had a total population of 104,371, with an estimated population of 108,629 in 2019. High Point is currently the ninthlargest municipality in North Carolina.
The city was established in 1859 by European Americans, on the site of a small village of the Saura people, who had inhabited the area for centuries before the arrival of the Europeans. The city was named for its central location atop a plateau that was the highest point on the initial rail line between Greensboro and Charlotte.
What is now High Point was settled before 1750 by the Saura, a Native American people who built a small village. By the early 19th century, the Saura had been replaced by the Catawba on the land that would become High Point, although the Catawba were also pushed out by European settlers by the 1840s. The city’s establishment coincided with the construction of the North Carolina Railroad in 1858–59, which passed through the city and connected it with Greensboro and Charlotte.
Most of the early settlers to the area were of English or Scottish descent, and the city’s culture has been strongly influenced by these roots. High Point University was established in 1859 as one of the first institutions of higher education for women in the United States. The city is also home to a number of historical landmarks from the antebellum and Civil War eras, as well as several museums and outdoor attractions.
In recent years, the city has been working to revitalize its downtown area, which has been hit hard by the loss of manufacturing jobs and the closure of several businesses.
