History of Wilmington (North Carolina)
In 1663, King Charles II of England accordingly awarded the land along the Cape Fear River to eight loyal noblemen, known as the “Lords Proprietors”. They planned to use the land for a colony, but failed to settle it. A few years later, in 1732, King George II approved a charter for the establishment of a colony on the Cape Fear River. The charter was granted to Sir Richard Everard and seven other proprietors, and they named the settlement after Spencer Compton, the Earl of Wilmington.
The first settlers arrived in the spring of 1733, and by 1740 the population had grown to over 500. In 1739, the colonists built the first church in Wilmington, known as St. James Parish. In 1755, the first newspaper in Wilmington, the Cape Fear Mercury, was established.
During the American Revolution, Wilmington was an important port city for the Patriot cause. It was here that ships carrying supplies and munitions from France and Spain first entered American waters. For a time, it was also the largest city in North Carolina.
In the early nineteenth century, Wilmington became an important cotton port. By 1860, the city’s population had grown to nearly 10,000, and it was one of the largest and wealthiest cities in the state.
The Civil War brought considerable changes to Wilmington. It was occupied by Union troops in 1861, and many of its leading citizens were forced into exile. In 1865, Union troops again occupied the city, and this time Wilmington was not returned to Confederate control until after the war.
In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Wilmington experienced a period of rapid growth. The city’s population more than doubled between 1880 and 1900, and by 1910 it had reached 60,000. This growth was due in part to the city’s position as a shipping center for the lumber and tobacco industries.
