History of Boone (North Carolina)

The city of Boone is located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina, and is the county seat of Watauga County. The city is named after American pioneer and explorer Daniel Boone.

Daniel Boone was born in Berks County, Pennsylvania in 1734. In 1750, his family moved to the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia. In 1755, he served as a militia commander in the French and Indian War. In 1769, he led the first group of settlers into Kentucky. In 1775, he was captured by Shawnee Indians and held captive for six months. In 1776, he escaped and made his way back to Kentucky. In 1777, he was made a colonel in the Kentucky militia. In 1778, he was made a member of the Kentucky legislature. He helped establish Boonesborough, Kentucky in 1779. In 1781, he was captured by the British and held prisoner until 1782.

After the Revolutionary War, Boone moved to Missouri, where he helped establish the town of Franklin. In 1799, he moved to Kentucky and built a cabin on the Kentucky River. He died in 1820 at the age of 86.

Boone, North Carolina was founded in 1869. The city is located in the Appalachian Mountains and is the home of Appalachian State University. The city has a population of about 18,000 people.
