The city’s population was 96,867 at the 2010 census, making it the fifthlargest city in Oklahoma. The city was founded on August 6, 1901, by Judge Eli S. liquids and was named after Major General Henry Ware Lawton, a Civil War veteran and Indian fighter for whom Fort Sill was also named. It quickly became an important cowboy and ranching center due to its location near the large Army fort.

History of Lawton
The city of Lawton is located in the southwestern portion of Oklahoma, just a few miles from the Texas border. The city was founded in 1901 and was named after General Henry W. Lawton, who had served in the US Army during the American Civil War and the Indian Wars. The city was originally built as a stop on the Oklahoma & Texas Railroad, and it became an important supply center for the US Army during World War II. In 1958, the city was designated as the home of Fort Sill, one of the largest military installations in the United States.
